Last Saturday BMX riders from around the world converged on the QMTBC Gorge Rd Jump Park for the 2012 Red Bull Roast it!
Although the weather was not exactly roasting the action on the jumps certainly was. There was a huge crowd of locals and visitors of all ages and nationalities, transfixed by the ease with which the riders flew through the air and flung their bikes around.
Of course there was the occasional moment where it all went horribly wrong but everyone managed to leave the jump area on their feet, even though a couple needed a shoulder to lean on.
Homegrown talent show
New Zealanders made a great show in the international field with Best Rider and the $3000 top prize going to Paul Langland, Best Trick going to Jed Mildon for his double backflip and Best Line being shared between George Bolter and American Brandon Dosch.
Gorge Road Jump Park
The publicity that our local jump park has received through Red Bull's generous sponsorship of this event has been amazing, with countless websites around the world showing photos and receiving comments this week on the scale and quality of the jumps.
Queenstown Mountain Bike Club committee member Nathan Greenwood and the team who spend so much time and effort building and maintaining the park do so as a labour of love. In 2010/11 the park managed to cover 75% of its costs through event sponsorship and entry fees with only $1,200 being required from the general fund-raising efforts of the club. Maintaining a park of this size and quality is no small effort and visitors from overseas are often blown away by the fact that it is free to ride there. You can help to support the park by joining the Club at any of our local bike shops.
Thanks to the Red Bull Roast It! team and the amazing Gorge Road dirt farmers for putting on such a great show. Check out our Gallery page for some photos and the rough video of the final round drop in below:
