Strong showing from Queenstown locals at nationals

mtbNationalsNewLogoThe national mountain bike champs were held a couple of weeks ago in Rotorua with the XC races held at Redwoods Forest and the DH at Skyline Gravity Park. There were a few Queenstown locals attending with Kate Fluker and Alana Columb  taking the win in the in the womens elite XC and DH respectively.  Kate took the win from second placed and rival Karen Hanlen.  Kate won by 42 seconds with a time of 1hr 31:56 building a convincing lead after Karen Hanlen took an unfortunate fall in the first lap.

After competing in the world cup circuit last year Alana Columb went on to turn the tables on last year’s winner Sarah Atkin to take win from her by 1 second.  Clearly pleased at the result Alanna commented ”I’ve been coming second for a little bit now, so it’s nice to have a change”.  Hopefully Alanna will we able to compete in the world circuit again this year and maybe bring home some podium results!

Also competing in the DH racing Sam Robbie managed to get second in the u17 Men and Mat Lawton got a top ten finish in the u19 Men race.  While Ben Luke competed in the u19 XC, Reon Boe and Aari Barrettin the  Elite Men DH, and Mathew Gillan U19 Men DH all of whom put in solid showings in these massively competitive races.

Well done to all who competed!
