QLDC Candidate Questionnaire: Wakatipu Ward

Voting papers are currently being sent out for the upcoming local body elections. We mountain bikers make up a significant block of eligible voters in the Queenstown Lakes District and it is important that we have a mayor and councillors who are supportive of mountain biking and the mountain bike club. To help you decide who to vote for we sent a short questionnaire out to all the candidates. Here are the responses we got back from the candidates for the Wakatipu ward. 6 of these people will be elected to the council so please take the time to read what they have to say and then vote for candidates who will help us GSD! There are quite a few candidates for the Wakatipu ward and they are presented here in the same order as they were listed on the council's website so don't read too much into the order they appear. Also if you aren’t on the electoral role it’s not too late to cast a special vote.

Wakatipu Ward

John MacDonald

John MacDonald1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Further development of Mountain Biking in the area is desirable. 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? It is desirable but not essential, good to be in the top bunch. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? That would depend on the proposal and business case put forward. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Yes I would support a renewal of this license in Gorge Road. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? Thanks for the opportunity

Simon Stamers-Smith

Simon Stamers-Smith1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Yes I do. 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? We strive to be the premier destination in all events and mountain biking should be one. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? As with all things cash is limited but we are supporting the trails trust in its work. I can see no reason why you too should not be supported. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Not being a cyclist have only looked at it from a distance. I would not support its removal. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? Good luck

Craig (Ferg) Ferguson

Craig (Ferg) Ferguson1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? I love the work they have done in the past and continue to do. It needs to be a balanced deliverable approach from here on in. 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? Always need to have big dreams and imaginings. We need to rattle Rotorua’s cage. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? Need to be aware that QLDC money is ratepayers money. Club need to keep in mind the annual plan process and to continue to lobby through that avenue. I look forward to the study on numbers, which council supported, being released when finished. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Yes 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? The QTMTBC is a inspiring community organisation who through the efforts of many volunteers have gone above and way beyond providing exceptional recreation in the Wakatipu basin. Keep it up.

Alexa Forbes

Alexa Forbes1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Yes, I do support that goal. Question for you, do you work in at all with the Queenstown Trails Network? 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? Yes, that's probably a good goal, although personally I like to think we should do what we do well rather than trying to put ourselves at the top of some arbitrary pyramid. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? Personally yes, but any funding would happen through the annual plan process and the community would need to show support through their input into that process. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Yes I would philosophically support the renewal of the Gorge Road license. I am generally not keen for the community to lose amenity to the commercial sector although realise that often licenses such as this are often short term use of land that is earmarked for something in the future. I would need full details of that license before I could fully commit to supporting its renewal. I can go looking for this information if that would be useful, but would need a bit of time. Do let me know. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? I think the club has done an amazing job over the years - I recognise and admire the way it has, from a volunteer base, created a fantastic resource that contributes to our economic and community wellbeing.

Hudson Turnbull

Hudson Turnbull1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Absolutely! 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? Maybe a bit lofty, but hey, why not! 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? Yes. However 'in favour' doesn’t mean we can get it through the annual plan process. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Yes. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? Keep up the good work guys. Inspirational!

Niki Gladding

Niki Gladding1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Yes, absolutely - and especially if there will be options for all levels of rider. 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? I'm happy with great-and-constantly-improving (and you've got it to there); I think the push to be 'the best' is probably up to your club and perhaps Skyline, the ski fields and DQ rather than QLDC. In saying that, I personally think its a smart goal given climate change and the effects on our ski industry. I also think it fits well with QLDC's Transport Strategy (we want people to be on bikes) and the need to retain diversity in our tourism industry. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? I've had a look at your website and at some of the you-tube videos...I was actually a bit blown away by how much you've achieved. The organisation looks to be very well run and your work obviously benefits both the riders and businesses in Queenstown. I also think it's great that you cater for all levels of rider (and therefore more ratepayers). So I would support events funding and additional funding through the annual plan process subject to seeing the application and the benefits to the community. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? After watching the kids on You-tube I'm sold on renewing that licence; parked up buses do nothing to challenge or inspire our young people . That Park is obviously a labour of love and a huge attraction for visitors and locals alike so you'd have my vote on that one. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? Just well done for what you've managed to achieve - it's pretty inspiring. I can't wait to see my kids have a go on the Gorge Rd jumps one day!

Tony Hill

Tony Hill1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Yes. Definitely 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? Yes. Definitely 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? Yes, in principle. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Yes, in principle but would need to weigh this up against what other uses maybe proposed for this land by Council. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? As a keen road and MTB cyclist I am keen to support any bike riding initiative. I will respond to your questions below but need to let you know that my support to the club is in principle as I have do not have full access to Council documents at this time to categorically give support.

Terri Anderson

Terri Anderson1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Yup – with other trail users who may be affected involved to make sure everyone is happy and gets to enjoy our environment. 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? There are great examples overseas of resorts who have turned their winter infrastructure to great summer use as well via mountain biking. I personally think any entrepreneurial diversification in sports that make good use of our infrastructure, gets people outdoors, and offers more accessible/low cost activities and inspiration for locals too is a good thing. But I haven’t looked at enough information about any negatives that would need to be mitigated – things like impact on environment, traffic, our usual issues – which mean that a good vision and planning should be part of getting there. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? I can’t honestly answer that without knowing what the plan for use would be and where the money would come from. I can agree that it seems like a good direction compared to some of the other things we spend money on 😉 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Definitely. You guys have done amazing things with the Jump Park and it would be a crying shame for that to go to waste. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? I prefer snowboarding 😀 But seriously, good on you for making things happen.

Tamati Daniel Maruera

Tamati Daniel Maruera1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Yes, I believe QLDC should retain all current Parks areas and further develop more Parks areas within in our district. 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? Yes, we have the best riders in the world among our community, and it would be awesome to develop the young talent and inspire the youth and visitors to take up the sport. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? Yes, if it assist with the attraction of visitors to Queenstown, but to what degree would have to be debated on. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? Yes, I would like the QLDC to retain all current parks and develop more parks. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? I believe we have a real opportunity to develop and promote the Sport. As lined in my "Sports, Arts and Culture" policy I would like to bring more International sports events to Queenstown. We currently have a sports ground in the center of the city which is been under used. We need to use such spaces to the greatest advantage, I envision watching a National and International MTB event taking place on that pristine site (Rec Grounds) within the near future.I believe I have the best intentions for MTB sports at heart, with me on council I would certainly work hard (with your club) to achieve the goals you and I have for the MTB within our community. All this is backed by my "Enviromental" and "Sports, Art and Culture" Policies and agendas clearly outlined on my facebook page and website. If elected I will make myself available to attend meetings with your MTB club, as sports and enviroment is a huge passion of mine. If you like, I would be more then happy to address you and the club with my intentions and vision for the QMTB at any time that suits you.

Michael Ramsay

Michael Ramsay1: Do you support the QMTBC's goal of further developing the local mountain bike trail network? Absolutely. 2: Should Queenstown strive to be the premier mountain bike destination in New Zealand? If that's what members want, I'm confident they will achieve that. 3: Are you in favour of the QLDC offering financial assistance to the QTMBC? There are many methods to 'financial assistance'. My understanding is that QLDC already has dedicated funding for specific tourist events. Other ways QLDC can assist is with regulation, promotion, written support, and available land. The question of parking for buses or land for biking events is not something I have the power to decide upon. I'd like to think QLDC can achieve both objectives. 4: Do you support the renewal of the QMTBC's license area on Gorge Road? I neither support, nor don't support it. I don't yet have the information to make an informed decision. I can say that I am in favour of practical outcomes, and I do believe that QLDC has a duty to facilitate community activities and work with those who endeavour to make them happen. 5: Do you have any other comments you would like to add? Yes. Keep up the awesome work!
