Locals in action at the 2011 NZ Cyclocross champs in Queenstown

Never fear there’s gonna be some primo CX racing in Queenstown this year even if the NZ champs don’t make it. Get those drop bars and skinny tyres sorted cause it’s gonna be a scream! The guys from Remarkables Park have come to the party and agreed to let the Queenstown Mountain Bike club use some of their land in Frankton for the series. Awesome terrain, next to the Kawarau River, with a swamp in the middle. With five races through the winter we must get at least one in snow…

2012 Queenstown Cyclocross Series confirmed as follows:

Race 1 – Sunday 17th June 10am

Race 2 – Sunday 1st July 2pm (part of national series and winter festival)

Race 3 – Sunday 22nd July 10am

Race 4 – Sunday 5th August 10am

Race 5 – Sunday 26th Aug 10am

Doing it again this Wednesday, no track building experience or special equipment required! Meet at the 7 Mile car park (town end) at 6pm every Wednesday.

Come along to a chilled out Wynyard jam from 5pm on Friday Feb 3. There’ll be some shuttles running for the Wynyard DH plus the usual great food on the barbie and some of the best trail jumps in NZ, what more do you want?

Fernhill Loop Update

The Queenstown mountain bike club have just started talks with the QLDC to try and get the locals favourite Fernhill Loop track back into good shape on the Fernhill side. The track through the beech trees on the QBP side is pretty sweet thanks to the guys from Outside Sports who have been doing some great work clearing deadfalls to keep it open. The Fernhill Loop track was recently handed over to QLDC from DOC and the council don’t currently have any funding available for maintaining it.

Over the last couple of years the trail on the Fernhill side has taken a bit of a battering from some extreme weather which has caused a bit of damage to the trail including a large tree windfall that has caused the trail to be practically impassable. It’s early days yet, but your club will be working hard with QLDC and local businesses to try to get this amazing trail back into shape all the way through to Fernhill for riders and walkers to enjoy for many years to come.
