It is worth noting that DQ have been vocal supporters of the club, particularly with the QLDC, as well as giving the club free membership to DQ worth $1,000 per year.  However, as yet this support has not directly contributed to our ability to build and maintain trails.  For this reason the club hopes to work with Destination Queenstown and its members to encourage all those who benefit financially from MTB visitors to recognise that trails cost money – especially with the increased wear of trail usage from bike tourists. It seems only fair that all who benefit should help to support the continued development of the region’s trails, not just the fantastic few who support the club right now .

If we get this right more bike tourists should mean more and better trails for everyone!

Start of the tree fall on Fernhill Loop

The Southland times  and the ODT (links below) recently reported that the popular Fernhill Loop will be closed.  The decision was made some time ago but has only just been made official by the council.  The Queenstown mountain bike club spoke to QLDC about this in February and they assured us at that time that the Queenstown Bike Park (QBP) side of the trail would remain open but not maintained by the council.  This has effectively been a community maintained track for the last few years anyway with the guys from Outside Sports among others doing quite a bit of work on it. Hopefully we will be able to keep the QBP end going like this until we can get the money to link it up to the wider trail network around Queenstown.  If you think this trail needs a bit of love contact the QMTBC and we’ll try and get a volunteer crew together for a bit of a maintenance session.

Last Tuesday night was a good ride but for Sam’s broken rear derailer, and me being totally shagged !!!! Good to have Brendan along.

This week will see a shorter ride with a difference. Geoff Hunt believes he has found a gully at Jacks Point that I don’t know about ..phftttt So the ride will be a bit of a mystery tour. As you can see on the Google image.

I know there are some of you that think the pace is to tough. If this is the reason you are not coming along, well, it’s just not a reason !!! I am more than happy to stick back with a slower group. And the faster group can wait for us at key points..or not !

The QLDC ten year draft plan is up for review currently. The club has prepared a submission applying for a budget to manage current trails and develop new trails in the Queenstown area.

The club loves building new trails and have big plans for the future but we struggle to maintain our current areas and trails.

QLDC ten year plan submission 2012

This will require a Special General Meeting to elect a Secretary and Treasurer as these positions can only be elected at a general meeting of the club.

Your club needs you! If you or anyone you know can help the club by taking on the role of either of these positions please contact us ASAP by emailing the committee at bikers@queenstownmtb.co.nz or any of the individual members of the commitee by using the form on the bottom of the About and Join page of the website ( http://www.queenstownmtb.co.nz/about-qmtbc/ ). The committee meetings are normally one per month but often a little less regular during the winter.

Here is the official description of the roles from the club constitution:

The duties of the Secretary shall be to call and attend all general meetings and all Committee meetings, to keep a register of the members of the QMTBC, to keep all records and generally to perform all clerical work of the QMTBC. Note: The register of members is managed by a dedicated committee member which makes this role a bit easier!

The duties of the Treasurer shall be to attend all general meetings and all Committee meetings, to receive all monies due the QMTBC, and issue a receipt for all monies received, and to place the same to the credit of the QMTBC banking account, to sign all cheques for disbursements in conjunction with the QMTBC President, to make payments in behalf of the QMTBC, to keep proper books of the accounts, to prepare and submit to the members of the QMTBC at the AGM a duly audited statement of the financial affairs of the QMTBC. Note: Assistance can be provided with this role if necessary and the departing treasurer is happy to help for a time to assist with the transition.
